Huacachina is a village that located in Ica Region in southwestern Peru. In 1999, the population of this village is only 115 people. Huacachina is a small village that build around a small natural lake in the desert. Huacachina is called as the oasis of America. There is a resort for a local families who come from the nearby city of Ica. Huacachina also become the main tourist attraction who like to do a sandboarding and take a dune buggy rides on sand dunes that can stretch for several hundred feet high. There is a legend about Huacachina that tell a story about how the lagoon was created. The lagoon was created when there is a beautiful native princess that apprehended at her bath by a young hunter. The pool that bathed by the princess who left later become a lagoon. The princess is wearing a mantle at that time. And when the princess is running away, the mantle become the surrounding sand dunes. The princess herself is rumored to be still alive in the oasis as a mermaid.
In order to access the groundwater, a private landowners near the oasis have installed a wells. This wells bring a negative impact for the oasis since the water become reduced drastically. As the result of the water loss, and to pleasing the destination of the tourist who visit this place, the city began to pump a water into the oasis to keep the water volume of the oasis that become the main attraction of all tourist who come and visit this place. There is no other oasis that located in America. Huacachina is the one and only city that can keep the oasis. Many people who come to this place will able to enjoy the oasis that provide in this city.
